CBSE Class 12 Chemistry 2026: question 23(a)

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2026, paper 56/1/1, section C, question 23(a), for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q23(a) · 3 marks · Short answerElectrochemistry

Answer the following :
(i) Why is the Equilibrium Constant () related to and not to ?
(ii) Two metals 'A' and 'B' have standard electrode potential values of –0.24 V and +0.80 V respectively. Which of these will liberate hydrogen gas from dil. ?
(iii) Write the cell reaction which occurs in lead storage battery when it is in charging.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

What is the value of E_cell when the reaction reaches equilibrium?

Hint 2

A metal liberates H₂ from acid only if its E° is less than 0 V.

Hint 3

Charging is the reverse of the discharge reaction.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) At equilibrium the cell reaction stops, so . The Nernst equation then reduces to (at 298 K). Hence is related to , while is zero.

    1 mark
  2. (ii) Metal A ( V). Its reduction potential is below that of the SHE (0.00 V), so it can reduce to . Metal B (+0.80 V) cannot do this.

    1 mark
  3. (iii) On charging, the discharge reaction is reversed:

    1 mark

Answer: (i) At equilibrium E_cell = 0, so E°_cell = (0.059/n) log K_c; (ii) Metal A; (iii) 2PbSO₄(s) + 2H₂O(l) → Pb(s) + PbO₂(s) + 2H₂SO₄(aq)

Where the marks are

  • States E_cell = 0 at equilibrium (1 mark)
  • Identifies metal A (1 mark)
  • Correct charging reaction (1 mark)
