Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2025, paper 56/7/1, section E, question 31(a), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q31(a) · 5 marks · Long answerThe d- and f-Block Elements
Answer the following.
- (i)3 marks
Account for the following : (I) The value for manganese is highly negative, whereas is highly positive. (II) Actinoids show wide range of oxidation states. (III) Transition metals have high melting points.
- (ii)2 marks

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Write the d-electron counts of Mn²⁺ and Mn³⁺.
Hint 2
Compare the energies of the 5f, 6d and 7s orbitals in actinoids.
Hint 3
In acid MnO₄⁻ goes to Mn²⁺; in neutral or faintly alkaline medium it goes to MnO₂, and I⁻ goes to IO₃⁻.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
(i)(I) Mn²⁺ has a stable half-filled configuration. Mn²⁺ is therefore hard to reduce to Mn, so is highly negative. Mn³⁺ () readily gains an electron to become stable Mn²⁺, so is highly positive.
- 1 mark
(i)(II) In actinoids, the 5f, 6d and 7s orbitals have comparable energies. Electrons from all of them can take part in bonding, so actinoids show a wide range of oxidation states.
- 1 mark
(i)(III) Transition metals have many unpaired electrons. Electrons from the (n−1)d orbitals, along with the ns electrons, take part in metallic bonding. This gives strong interatomic bonding and hence high melting points.

(ii)(I)
- 1 mark
(ii)(II)
Answer: (i) (I) Stable d⁵ Mn²⁺; (II) comparable energies of 5f, 6d, 7s; (III) strong metallic bonding involving (n−1)d electrons. (ii) (I) 2Mn²⁺ + 5SO₄²⁻ + 3H₂O; (II) 2MnO₂ + 2OH⁻ + IO₃⁻
Where the marks are
- Stability of half-filled d⁵ Mn²⁺ (1 mark)
- Comparable energies of 5f, 6d and 7s orbitals (1 mark)
- (n−1)d electrons in metallic bonding (1 mark)
- Balanced equation with Mn²⁺ and SO₄²⁻ (1 mark)
- Balanced equation with MnO₂ and IO₃⁻ (1 mark)
