CBSE Class 12 Chemistry 2025: question 31(A)
Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2025, paper 56/1/1, section E, question 31(A), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q31(A) · 5 marks · Long answerElectrochemistry
(a) Write the cell reaction and calculate the e.m.f. of the following cell at 298 K : (3 + 2 = 5)
(Given : V, V)
(b) Account for the following ;
(i) On the basis of E° values, gas should be liberated at anode but it is gas which is liberated in the electrolysis of aqueous NaCl.
(ii) Conductivity of decreases on dilution.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Electrons flow from the left (Sn) electrode; write the oxidation and reduction, then add them.
Hint 2
Q = [Sn²⁺]/[H⁺]² with n = 2.
Hint 3
Conductivity is per unit volume. What happens to the number of ions in each cm³ on dilution?
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

(a) Sn is the anode and the hydrogen electrode is the cathode. Cell reaction (n = 2):

(b)(i) Oxygen evolution at the anode has a high overpotential, so in practice is oxidised in preference to water and is liberated.

(b)(ii) Conductivity is the conductance of unit volume of solution. On dilution the number of ions carrying current per unit volume decreases, even though ionisation of increases. So conductivity decreases.
Answer: Sn + 2H⁺ → Sn²⁺ + H₂; E_cell = 0.1105 V; (b)(i) overpotential of O₂; (ii) fewer ions per unit volume on dilution
Where the marks are
- Correct cell reaction (1 mark)
- Correct Nernst expression with substitution (1 mark)
- E_cell = 0.1105 V (1 mark)
- Overpotential of oxygen (1 mark)
- Fewer ions per unit volume on dilution (1 mark)
