Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

A tertiary alcohol comes from a ketone and a Grignard reagent, so which alkyl group must be added to butan-2-one?

Hint 2

For the others, think of Friedel–Crafts alkylation, zinc dust distillation and Williamson synthesis.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. I. (3-methylpentan-3-ol)

    1 mark
  2. II. (4-methoxytoluene, major) + some ortho isomer (Friedel–Crafts alkylation; –OCH is o/p directing).

    1 mark
  3. III. (distillation with zinc dust)

    1 mark
  4. IV. Williamson synthesis: ; then (alternatively, heat CHCl with dry AgO).

Answer: I. Butan-2-one + C₂H₅MgBr, then H₃O⁺; II. CH₃Cl/anhyd. AlCl₃; III. Zn dust, heat; IV. C₂H₅ONa (Williamson synthesis). Any three carry 1 mark each.

Where the marks are

  • Each correct conversion with reagents and product, any three (1 mark each, 3 marks)
