Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

One amine is primary and the other secondary; which test works only for 1° amines?

Hint 2

The diazonium group is a good leaving group and is replaced directly by iodide.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) Carbylamine test: Warm each amine with chloroform and alcoholic KOH. Ethanamine, a primary amine, gives the foul-smelling ethyl isocyanide; dimethylamine, a secondary amine, gives no such smell.

    1 mark
  2. (ii) Iodobenzene is formed:

    1 mark

Answer: (i) Carbylamine test – ethanamine gives foul-smelling isocyanide, dimethylamine does not; (ii) Iodobenzene ()

Where the marks are

  • Correct distinguishing test with observation (1 mark)
  • Iodobenzene as product (1 mark)
