CBSE Class 12 Chemistry sample paper 2024-25: question 1

From the official CBSE sample question paper for 2024-25, section A, question 1, for 1 mark. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q1 · 1 mark · MCQAmines

Ammonolysis of ethyl chloride followed by reaction of the amine so formed with 1 mole of methyl chloride gives an amine that

  1. (A)reacts with Hinsberg reagent to form a product soluble in an alkali.
  2. (B)on reaction with Nitrous acid, produced nitrogen gas.
  3. (C)reacts with Benzenesulphonyl chloride to form a product that is insoluble in alkali.
  4. (D)does not react with Hinsberg reagent.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Work out which amine forms after one methyl group is added to ethylamine.

Hint 2

Recall how 1°, 2° and 3° amines behave with Hinsberg reagent.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Ammonolysis: (primary amine). With 1 mol : (secondary amine).

  2. A secondary amine reacts with benzenesulphonyl chloride (Hinsberg reagent) to give an N,N-disubstituted sulphonamide. It has no H on N, so it is not acidic and is insoluble in alkali. Option (C).

    1 mark

Answer: Option (C)

Where the marks are

  • Identifies the secondary amine and its alkali-insoluble Hinsberg product (1 mark)
