Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

The three levels go from genes within a species, to species in a region, to ecosystems in an area.

Hint 2

Use NCERT examples: rice strains, Western vs Eastern Ghats amphibians, India vs Norway ecosystems.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Genetic diversity: A single species can show high diversity at the genetic level over its range of distribution. Example: India has more than 50,000 genetically different strains of rice and about 1,000 varieties of mango. Another example is Rauvolfia vomitoria in different Himalayan ranges, which varies in the potency and concentration of reserpine.

    1 mark
  2. Species diversity: This is the diversity in the number and variety of species in a region. Example: the Western Ghats have greater amphibian species diversity than the Eastern Ghats.

    1 mark
  3. Ecological diversity: This is the diversity at the ecosystem level, meaning the variety of ecosystems in an area. Example: India, with deserts, rain forests, mangroves, coral reefs, wetlands, estuaries and alpine meadows, has greater ecosystem diversity than a Scandinavian country like Norway.

    1 mark

Answer: Genetic (e.g. 50,000 rice strains), species (Western Ghats amphibians vs Eastern Ghats), ecological (India's deserts, rain forests, coral reefs).
