CBSE Class 12 Biology 2026: question 26

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2026, paper 57/5/1, section C, question 26, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q26 · 3 marks · Short answerBiotechnology and its Applications

Transgenic animals are produced by man. Explain any three ways in which such animals can be beneficial to humans.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

NCERT lists five uses of transgenic animals. Think about research, medicine and testing.

Hint 2

Remember Rosie the cow and transgenic mice used for polio vaccine testing.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Study of normal physiology and development: Transgenic animals can be designed to study how genes are regulated and how they affect normal body functions and development. An example is the study of complex growth factors such as insulin-like growth factor.

    1 mark
  2. Study of disease: Many transgenic animals serve as models for human diseases such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimer's. These models help us understand how genes contribute to disease and help in investigating new treatments.

    1 mark
  3. Biological products: Transgenic animals can make useful products. For example, human protein α-1-antitrypsin is produced for treating emphysema. The transgenic cow Rosie (1997) produced milk rich in human alpha-lactalbumin, which is nutritionally more balanced for human babies. (Also: vaccine safety – transgenic mice are used to test the safety of polio vaccine; chemical safety testing – animals made more sensitive to toxic substances are used to study their effects.)

    1 mark

Answer: Any three: study of normal physiology/development, study of disease, biological products (α-1-antitrypsin, Rosie's milk), vaccine safety testing, chemical safety testing.

Where the marks are

  • First use explained with an example, e.g. study of gene regulation and growth (1 mark)
  • Second use explained, e.g. disease models for cancer or cystic fibrosis (1 mark)
  • Third use explained, e.g. biological products, vaccine or chemical safety testing (1 mark)
