Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Think about how many flowers and how many plants are involved in geitonogamy.
Hint 2
Compare the process of pollen transfer with the genetic source of the pollen.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Geitonogamy is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther of one flower to the stigma of another flower on the same plant.
- 1 mark
Like cross-pollination (functionally): the pollen moves between two different flowers, so it needs a pollinating agent (wind, insects and so on). Like self-pollination/autogamy (genetically): the pollen comes from the same plant, so the gametes are genetically identical and no new genetic variation results.
Answer: Geitonogamy is functionally cross-pollination (it needs a pollinating agent between two flowers) but genetically similar to autogamy (the pollen comes from the same plant).
Where the marks are
- Defines geitonogamy as pollen transfer between different flowers of the same plant (1 mark)
- States it is functionally like cross-pollination (needs an agent) but genetically like autogamy (same plant) (1 mark)
