Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Think of two steps: one stops the flower's own pollen, the other stops outside pollen.
Hint 2
One step uses forceps on the anthers; the other uses a butter-paper cover.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Emasculation: If the female parent has bisexual flowers, the anthers are removed from the flower bud with forceps before they dehisce. This stops self-pollination by the flower's own pollen.
- 1 mark
Bagging: The emasculated flower is covered with a bag of suitable size, usually made of butter paper. This keeps unwanted pollen off the stigma. When the stigma becomes receptive, the desired pollen is dusted on it and the flower is re-bagged.
Answer: By emasculation (removing anthers before dehiscence) followed by bagging (covering with butter-paper bag) to prevent contamination by unwanted pollen.
Where the marks are
- Explains emasculation – removal of anthers before dehiscence (1 mark)
