Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Start with what a cell address is.
Hint 2
Think about what happens to each reference when a formula is copied down.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
(i) Cell reference identifies a cell or range by its column letter and row number (its address), e.g. B5, for use in formulas.
- 1 mark
(ii) Relative reference (e.g. A1) changes to match the new position when a formula is copied to another cell; this is the default.
- 1 mark
(iii) Absolute reference puts a dollar sign before both the column letter and the row number of the address (A1 written with a dollar sign before "A" and before "1"). It stays fixed on the same cell however the formula is copied.
- 1 mark
(iv) Mixed reference puts the dollar sign before only the column letter or only the row number, so one part stays fixed and the other changes when the formula is copied.
Answer: Cell reference = cell address; relative changes when copied; absolute stays fixed; mixed fixes only the row or only the column
