Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Which cell's address does a merged cell keep?

Hint 2

Look in the Alignment group of the Home tab.

Hint 3

Splitting is the same button pressed again.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Meaning. Merging joins two or more adjacent cells (across rows or columns) into one larger cell. The merged cell takes the address of the upper-left cell, and only that cell's content is kept, usually centred.

  2. How to merge. Select the adjacent cells; on the Home tab, in the Alignment group, click Merge & Center (or choose Merge Across / Merge Cells from its drop-down).

  3. Steps to split a merged cell. (1) Select the merged cell; the Merge & Center button shows as selected. (2) Click Merge & Center again (or choose Unmerge Cells). The content goes back to the upper-left cell of the range.
