Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Look at the Alignment group on the Home tab.

Hint 2

Think of position, angle and fit of text in a cell.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Opening the options. Select the range, then open the Alignment group on the Home tab (or Format Cells → Alignment tab), choose the settings and click OK.

    1 mark
  2. Text alignment: horizontal (left, centre, right, justify) and vertical (top, middle, bottom) position of text in the cell.

    1 mark
  3. Orientation / text direction: text can be rotated to an angle or set to read in a chosen direction.

    1 mark
  4. Text control: wrap text within the cell, shrink to fit (autofit the text to the cell) or merge cells so that text spreads across them.

    1 mark
  5. Internal margins and indent: the space between the text and the cell or element border can be set on the left, right, top and bottom (and indent from the edge), and text can be placed in columns.

    2 marks
