Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

An employee's salary is a charge; partners' salaries are appropriations.

Hint 2

When profit is short, share it in the ratio of the appropriations.

Hint 3

Appropriations cannot be made out of a loss.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Annual salaries: B ₹ 2,000 × 12 = ₹ 24,000; C ₹ 16,000; D ₹ 4,000 × 4 = ₹ 16,000; total ₹ 56,000. Amit's salary (₹ 5,000 half-yearly = ₹ 10,000) is a charge and is deducted first.

    ½ mark
  2. Case 1: profit = ₹ 72,000 − ₹ 10,000 = ₹ 62,000, enough for salaries. Remaining ₹ 6,000 shared equally. B ₹ 26,000, C ₹ 18,000, D ₹ 18,000.

    1 mark
  3. Case 2: profit = ₹ 45,000 − ₹ 10,000 = ₹ 35,000, less than ₹ 56,000, so it is shared in the ratio of salaries 24 : 16 : 16 = 3 : 2 : 2. B ₹ 15,000, C ₹ 10,000, D ₹ 10,000.

    1 mark
  4. Case 3: loss = ₹ 20,000 + ₹ 10,000 = ₹ 30,000. No salary is allowed in a loss; each partner bears ₹ 10,000.

    ½ mark

Answer: Case 1: B ₹ 26,000, C ₹ 18,000, D ₹ 18,000 (salaries + ₹ 2,000 each). Case 2: B ₹ 15,000, C ₹ 10,000, D ₹ 10,000. Case 3: loss ₹ 10,000 each

Where the marks are

  • Annual salaries and employee's salary as a charge (½ mark)
  • Case 1 (1 mark)
  • Case 2 (1 mark)
  • Case 3 (½ mark)
