Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Which rivers bring this soil, and what does it contain?

Hint 2

Recall the two types by age and which is more fertile.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Alluvial soil is deposited by the three Himalayan river systems, the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra. It consists of varying proportions of sand, silt and clay.

    1 mark
  2. Moving inland towards the river valleys, soil particles become somewhat bigger. Near the break of slope in piedmont plains such as Duars, Chos and Terai, the soils are coarse.

    1 mark
  3. By age, alluvial soil is classified as old (Bangar) and new (Khadar).

    1 mark
  4. Bangar has more kankar nodules, while Khadar has finer particles and is more fertile.

    1 mark
  5. The soil is rich in potash, phosphoric acid and lime, ideal for sugarcane, paddy, wheat and other cereals and pulses. Being fertile, these regions are intensively cultivated and densely populated.

    1 mark

Answer: Alluvial soil: deposited by Himalayan rivers, sand-silt-clay mix, Bangar and Khadar types, rich in potash, phosphoric acid and lime, very fertile.

  • Particle size varies with location (1 mark)
  • Classified as Bangar and Khadar (1 mark)
