Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Think about when each is sown, relative to the monsoon.

Hint 2

Name a typical crop of each season.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Rabi crops are sown in winter (October–December) and harvested in summer (April–June). They need a cool climate to grow and a warm one to ripen. Examples are wheat, barley, peas, gram and mustard, grown mainly in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Winter rain from western temperate cyclones helps them.

    1 mark
  2. Kharif crops are sown with the onset of the monsoon and harvested in September–October. They need hot weather and heavy rain. Examples are paddy, maize, jowar, bajra, cotton and soyabean, with rice grown in Assam, West Bengal and coastal Odisha.

    1 mark

Answer: Rabi: winter sowing, summer harvest (wheat, mustard). Kharif: monsoon sowing, autumn harvest (paddy, maize).
