CBSE Class 10 Social Science 2023: question 35

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2023, paper 32/2/1, section E, question 35, for 4 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q35 · 4 marks · Case-basedCompetency-basedWater Resources

Read the given source and answer the questions that follow: Most of the objections to the projects arose due to their failure to achieve the purposes for which they were built. Ironically, the dams that were constructed to control the floods have triggered floods due to sedimentation in the reservoir. Moreover, the big dams have mostly been unsuccessful in controlling floods at the time of excessive rainfall. You may have seen or read how the release of water from the dams during heavy rains aggravated the flood situation in Maharashtra and Gujarat in 2006. The floods have not only devastated life and property but also caused extensive soil erosion. Sedimentation also meant that the flood plains were deprived of silt, a natural fertiliser, further adding on to the problem of land degradation. It was also observed that the multi-purpose projects induced earthquakes, caused water-borne diseases and pests and pollution resulting from excessive use of water.

  1. (35.1)

Name the movement against the river project in Gujarat.

    1 mark
  2. (35.2)

How have the big dams mostly been unsuccessful in controlling floods at the time of excessive rainfall?

    1 mark
  3. (35.3)

Analyse any two merits of multi-purpose river projects. (2×1=2)

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

The movement was against the Sardar Sarovar dam on a river in Gujarat.

Hint 2

Look at the passage's example of the 2006 floods.

Hint 3

Think about what dams give: power and water for farms.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (35.1) Narmada Bachao Andolan.

    1 mark
  2. (35.2) During heavy rain, water released from big dams aggravates the flood situation downstream, as happened in Maharashtra and Gujarat in 2006.

    1 mark
  3. (35.3) Merit 1: Multi-purpose projects generate hydroelectricity.

    1 mark
  4. (35.3) Merit 2: They provide water through canals for irrigation and also help in flood control and soil conservation.

    1 mark

Answer: (35.1) Narmada Bachao Andolan. (35.2) Release of water from dams in heavy rain worsens floods. (35.3) Hydroelectricity generation and irrigation through canals.

Where the marks are

  • Names Narmada Bachao Andolan (1 mark)
  • Release of dam water during heavy rain aggravates floods (1 mark)
  • First merit, such as electricity (1 mark)
  • Second merit, such as irrigation or soil conservation (1 mark)
