CBSE Class 10 Science 2026: question 34(B)

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2026, paper 31/5/1, section C, question 34(B), for 2 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q34(B) · 2 marks · Very short answerThe Human Eye and the Colourful World

Draw a ray diagram to show the correction of eye defect of an old man who can not see an object placed closer than 1 m from his eye, clearly.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

If he cannot see objects closer than 1 m, his near point is farther than normal — which defect is this?

Hint 2

This defect needs a lens that converges light; draw rays from 25 cm through this lens appearing to come from 1 m.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. The man's near point has receded to 1 m (hypermetropia/presbyopia), so the defect is corrected by a convex (converging) lens. (For reference: cm, cm; , cm, D.)

  2. Diagram (a) – defective eye: rays from an object N at 25 cm, after passing through the eye lens, meet at a point behind the retina; mark the near point N′ at 1 m.

    1 mark
  3. Diagram (b) – corrected eye: place a convex lens in front of the eye; rays from N (25 cm) are converged so they appear to come from N′ (1 m) and the image forms on the retina. Show arrows on all rays to indicate the direction of light.

    1 mark

Answer: Convex lens (about +3 D) placed before the eye makes rays from 25 cm appear to come from 1 m and focus on the retina.

Where the marks are

  • Ray diagram of defective eye with image behind retina (1 mark)
  • Ray diagram of correction with convex lens and image on retina (1 mark)
  • ½ mark deducted if direction of light is not shown
