Q12(A) · 2 marks · Very short answerCompetency-basedControl and Coordination
Varun is diabetic. His latest ultrasound reports showed a blockage in his pancreatic duct. How will this affect the dual functioning of the pancreas?

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
The pancreas works both as an exocrine gland and as an endocrine gland. Which of these uses the duct?
Hint 2
Hormones go straight into the blood. Think about what diabetes already says about insulin.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Exocrine (digestive) function: Pancreatic juice contains trypsin, lipase and pancreatic amylase, and it reaches the small intestine through the pancreatic duct. With the duct blocked, these enzymes cannot reach the intestine. Digestion of proteins, fats and carbohydrates will therefore be impaired.
- 1 mark
Endocrine (hormonal) function: Insulin is made by the islets of Langerhans and passes directly into the blood without using the duct, so the blockage does not affect this route. However, Varun is diabetic, so his insulin secretion is already deficient and his blood sugar control remains affected.
Answer: Digestive function is affected because pancreatic enzymes cannot reach the small intestine. The hormonal function (insulin) is not affected by the blockage but is already impaired because he is diabetic.
Where the marks are
- Explains that pancreatic enzymes cannot reach the small intestine, so digestion of proteins, fats and carbohydrates suffers (1 mark)
- States that insulin secretion is already affected because of diabetes (1 mark)
