Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Which hormone is called the 'fight or flight' hormone, and where is it made?

Hint 2

Think of the social misuse of knowing the sex of the unborn child, and of what bananas and roses cannot do.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (a) In stress or danger, the adrenal gland secretes adrenaline into the blood. Adrenaline increases the heart rate and breathing rate and sends more blood to the muscles. This prepares the body to face or escape the emergency, so the gland is called the stress gland.

    1 mark
  2. (b) Prenatal sex determination is banned to stop female foeticide, the killing of female foetuses. This practice causes a sharp decline in the female-to-male sex ratio.

    1 mark
  3. (c) Vegetative propagation is advantageous because:

    • plants raised this way flower and fruit earlier than plants grown from seeds;
    • plants that have lost the ability to produce seeds, such as banana, orange, rose and jasmine, can still be propagated;
    • the new plants are genetically similar to the parent, so desirable characters are kept.

    (Any one point earns the mark.)

    1 mark

Answer: (a) It secretes adrenaline, which prepares the body for emergencies. (b) To prevent female foeticide. (c) Earlier flowering and fruiting, propagation of seedless plants, and offspring identical to the parent.

Where the marks are

  • Links the adrenal gland to adrenaline, which prepares the body for stress (1 mark)
  • Gives prevention of female foeticide as the reason for the ban (1 mark)
  • Gives any one valid advantage of vegetative propagation (1 mark)
