Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

What do anthers produce?

Hint 2

With anthers removed and the flower bagged, can any pollen reach the stigma?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Removing the anthers in the bud stage removes the flower's own pollen, so self-pollination cannot happen.

  2. Covering the bud with a paper bag stops pollen from other flowers reaching the stigma, so cross-pollination cannot happen either.

  3. Without pollination there is no fertilisation. Without fertilisation, ovules do not become seeds and the ovary does not become a fruit. The correct option is (C).

    1 mark

Answer: Option (C): They will not produce any seeds or fruits.

Where the marks are

  • Selects (C), reasoning that no pollination leads to no fertilisation and so no seeds or fruits (1 mark)
