CBSE Class 10 Science sample paper 2026-27: question 26(B)

From the official CBSE sample question paper for 2026-27, section B, question 26(B), for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q26(B) · 3 marks · Short answerCompetency-basedCarbon and its Compounds

B. Ramya performs an experiment in the following two steps: Step 1: Heats ethanol with conc. at 170°C to get product A. Step 2: Passes hydrogen gas over product A, using Ni as a catalyst and gets product B. (i) Name the products A and B. (ii) Write the reactions involved in both the steps.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Hot concentrated sulphuric acid removes water from ethanol.

Hint 2

Adding hydrogen across a double bond with a Ni catalyst turns an unsaturated compound into a saturated one.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) Product A = ethene (); product B = ethane ().

    1 mark
  2. (ii) Step 1: hot conc. acts as a dehydrating agent:

    1 mark
  3. Step 2: hydrogenation (addition of hydrogen) in the presence of a nickel catalyst:

    1 mark

Answer: (i) A = ethene, B = ethane; (ii) ;

Where the marks are

  • Names A as ethene (0.5 mark) and B as ethane (0.5 mark)
  • Equation for dehydration of ethanol (1 mark)
  • Equation for hydrogenation of ethene using Ni (1 mark)
