CBSE Class 10 Science sample paper 2026-27: question 17

From the official CBSE sample question paper for 2026-27, section B, question 17, for 1 mark. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q17 · 1 mark · MCQCompetency-basedChemical Reactions and Equations

Chameleons contain crystals that reflect light and produce colour. Adjusting the spacing between these crystals, they can alter the wavelengths of light reflected, thus changing their skin colour. Based on the above information, we can infer that the change in colour by chameleons is a:

  1. (A)chemical change because change in colour takes place.
  2. (B)chemical change because wavelength of reflected light changes.
  3. (C)physical change because the space between crystals is adjusted.
  4. (D)physical change because light is reflected by crystals.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Is any new substance formed when the crystals move apart or together?

Hint 2

A colour change is not always proof of a chemical change.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. The chameleon only changes the spacing between the crystals. The crystals themselves are not converted into any new substance.

  2. A change in which no new substance is formed is a physical change. The colour changes only because the altered spacing changes which wavelength of light is reflected. The correct option is (C).

    1 mark

Answer: Option (C): physical change because the space between crystals is adjusted.

Where the marks are

  • Selects (C): physical change, since no new substance forms and only the crystal spacing changes (1 mark)
