Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Plants have no nerves, so how might a signal pass from cell to cell?
Hint 2
Without muscles, how can a plant cell change its shape?
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Plants have no nervous tissue. When the sensitive plant (touch-me-not) is touched, the information is passed from cell to cell by electrical-chemical means.
- 1 mark
Plant cells respond by changing the amount of water in them. They swell or shrink, which changes their shape, and this makes the leaves fold and droop.
Answer: Touch is communicated from cell to cell by electrical-chemical signals; cells change shape by gaining or losing water (swelling or shrinking), so the leaves fold.
Where the marks are
- States electrical-chemical communication from cell to cell (1 mark)
- Explains movement by change in water content and shape of cells (1 mark)
