Q10 · 2 marks · Very short answerCompetency-basedLife Processes

Answer the following.

  1. (A)

Due to narrowing of the bile duct, the bile secretion from the liver to the small intestine was obstructed. How will the process of digestion be affected?

    0 marks
  2. (B)

How does the length of the intestine depend on the nature of food habit in different animals?

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

What two things does bile do to the food arriving from the stomach?

Hint 2

Which is harder to digest: grass (cellulose) or meat? How would that affect the time food must spend in the intestine?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (A) Food reaching the small intestine from the stomach is acidic. Bile from the liver makes it alkaline, so that pancreatic enzymes can act. Bile salts also emulsify fats, breaking large fat drops into small globules so enzymes act on them better.

    ½ mark
  2. If the bile duct is blocked, the food stays acidic and fats are not emulsified. So digestion of fats will be improper or incomplete.

    ½ mark
  3. (B) Herbivores eating grass need a longer small intestine so that the cellulose in their food has enough time to be digested. Carnivores such as tigers eat meat, which is easier to digest, so they have a shorter small intestine.

    1 mark

Answer: (A) Food is not made alkaline and fats are not emulsified, so fat digestion is improper; (B) herbivores (cellulose diet) have a longer small intestine, carnivores (meat diet) a shorter one.

Where the marks are

  • States the role of bile: makes the medium alkaline and/or emulsifies fats (½ mark)
  • Concludes that fat digestion is affected when bile is blocked (½ mark)
  • Relates a long intestine in herbivores to cellulose digestion and a short one in carnivores to easily digested meat (1 mark)
