CBSE Class 10 Science 2025: question 26

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2025, paper 31/4/1, section B, question 26, for 2 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q26 · 2 marks · Very short answerMagnetic Effects of Electric Current

What are magnetic field lines. List two important properties of magnetic field lines.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Think of the pattern made by iron filings around a bar magnet.

Hint 2

Consider what would happen to the field direction at a point if two lines crossed there.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Magnetic field lines are imaginary lines drawn around a magnet to represent its magnetic field. The tangent at any point on a line gives the direction of the field at that point.

    1 mark
  2. Property 1: No two magnetic field lines ever cross each other.

    ½ mark
  3. Property 2: Outside the magnet, field lines emerge from the north pole and merge at the south pole. They are closed curves, and inside the magnet they run from the south pole to the north pole.

    ½ mark

Answer: Magnetic field lines are imaginary lines representing the magnetic field around a magnet. They never cross, and they run from N to S outside the magnet as closed curves.

Where the marks are

  • Correct definition of magnetic field lines (1 mark)
  • Any two correct properties (½ mark each)
