CBSE Class 10 Science 2024: question 26

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2024, paper 31/1/1, section B, question 26, for 2 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q26 · 2 marks · Very short answerMagnetic Effects of Electric Current

(i) Two magnetic field lines do not intersect each other. Why?
(ii) How is a uniform magnetic field in a given region represented? Draw a diagram in support of your answer.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

The tangent to a field line at a point gives the direction of the field there.

Hint 2

For a uniform field, both the strength and the direction are the same everywhere. How should the lines be spaced?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) If two field lines intersected, the point of intersection would have two directions of magnetic field. A compass needle placed there would have to point in two directions at once, which is not possible.

    1 mark
  2. (ii) A uniform magnetic field is represented by parallel, equally spaced straight lines, all with arrows in the same direction.

    ½ mark
  3. Diagram: draw 4–5 parallel straight lines at equal spacing, each with an arrow pointing the same way. An example is the field inside a long current-carrying solenoid.

    ½ mark

Answer: (i) There would be two directions of field at one point, which is impossible; (ii) equidistant parallel straight lines

Where the marks are

  • Reason: two field directions at one point is impossible (1 mark)
  • Uniform field shown by equidistant parallel straight lines (½ mark)
  • Correct diagram with arrows (½ mark)
