CBSE Class 10 Science 2025: question 28

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2025, paper 31/2/1, section C, question 28, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q28 · 3 marks · Short answerMetals and Non-metals

Write the electron-dot structures of (i) sodium, and (ii) oxygen. Using these structures, show the formation of sodium oxide. Mark the anion and cation present in this compound. (At. No. – Sodium = 11 and Oxygen = 8)

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Write the electronic configurations first and count the valence electrons.

Hint 2

Sodium loses 1 electron and oxygen needs 2. How many sodium atoms are needed per oxygen atom?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Electronic configurations: Na (Z = 11): 2, 8, 1, so it has 1 valence electron. O (Z = 8): 2, 6, so it has 6 valence electrons.

  2. (i) Electron-dot structure of sodium: (one dot).

    ½ mark
  3. (ii) Electron-dot structure of oxygen: the symbol O with six dots around it (two pairs and two single dots).

    ½ mark
  4. Formation of sodium oxide: each of two Na atoms transfers its one electron (shown by arrows) to one O atom. O gains 2 electrons and completes its octet.
    , i.e. = .

    1 mark
  5. Anion: oxide ion, .

    ½ mark
  6. Cation: sodium ion, .

    ½ mark

Answer: Na· and O with 6 dots; 2Na· + O → (Na⁺)₂[O]²⁻ (Na₂O); anion O²⁻, cation Na⁺.

Where the marks are

  • Electron-dot structure of Na (½ mark)
  • Electron-dot structure of O (½ mark)
  • Shows transfer of electrons from two Na atoms to O to form Na₂O (1 mark)
  • Identifies anion O²⁻ (½ mark)
  • Identifies cation Na⁺ (½ mark)
