Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Where does the first step of respiration happen?

Hint 2

Which cells make lactic acid, and under what condition?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Glucose is broken down to pyruvate (glycolysis) in the cytoplasm of all cells. So site (a) is the cytoplasm.

  2. Pyruvate changes to lactic acid in muscle cells when oxygen is lacking. So site (b) is oxygen-deficient muscle cells. The answer is option (D).
