Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Compare how active plants are with animals.
Hint 2
Which tissue carries food made in the leaves?
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
(i) Plants do not move, and many of their tissues are made of dead cells. So their energy needs are low, and a slow transport system is enough.
- 1 mark
(ii) Phloem translocates the soluble products of photosynthesis (sugars) from the leaves to other parts of the plant. It also carries amino acids and other substances to storage organs (roots, fruits, seeds) and growing parts.
Answer: (i) Low energy needs (no movement, many dead cells); (ii) translocation of food from leaves to other parts
Where the marks are
- (i) Gives the low energy needs reason (1 mark)
- (ii) States that phloem translocates food / products of photosynthesis (1 mark)
