Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Do plants carry out photosynthesis and respiration? What is left over?

Hint 2

Think of stomata, vacuoles, resins and gums, and falling leaves.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. The statement is incorrect. Plants also carry out metabolic activities such as photosynthesis and respiration, and these produce waste products. Plants simply get rid of their wastes in ways different from animals.

    1 mark
  2. Way 1: Oxygen, a by-product of photosynthesis, and CO from respiration are removed by diffusion through the stomata. Excess water is lost by transpiration.

    ½ mark
  3. Way 2: Other wastes are stored in vacuoles, or in old leaves and bark that fall off. Some are stored as resins and gums in old xylem, and some are released into the soil around the roots.

    ½ mark

Answer: The statement is wrong; plants do produce wastes (O₂, CO₂, water, resins, gums, etc.) and remove them through stomata and transpiration, storage in vacuoles, resins and gums, and shedding of leaves.

Where the marks are

  • States that the statement is wrong because plants produce metabolic wastes (1 mark)
  • Gives any two valid ways plants get rid of wastes (½ mark each)
