CBSE Class 10 Science 2024: question 33

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2024, paper 31/5/1, section C, question 33, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q33 · 3 marks · Short answerCompetency-basedOur Environment

Differentiate between food chain and food web. In a food chain consisting of deer, grass and tiger, if the population of deer decreases, what will happen to the population of organisms belonging to the first and third trophic levels?

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

One is a single straight sequence; the other is many such sequences linked together.

Hint 2

Arrange grass, deer and tiger in order of who eats whom. Then ask what happens to the level below and the level above when deer are fewer.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Food chain: a single linear series of organisms in which each organism feeds on the one before it, at successive trophic levels, e.g. grass → deer → tiger.

    1 mark
  2. Food web: a network of many interconnected food chains (branching lines) that gives several alternative feeding connections among the organisms of an ecosystem.

    1 mark
  3. In grass → deer → tiger, if deer decrease, fewer deer feed on grass, so the population of grass (first trophic level) will increase.

    ½ mark
  4. Tigers get less food, so the population of tigers (third trophic level) will decrease.

    ½ mark

Answer: Food chain is a single linear feeding sequence; food web is a network of interconnected food chains. Grass (first level) increases and tiger (third level) decreases.

Where the marks are

  • Defines food chain correctly (1 mark)
  • Defines food web as a network of interconnected food chains (1 mark)
  • States that grass population increases (½ mark)
  • States that tiger population decreases (½ mark)
