CBSE Class 10 Science 2024: question 28

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2024, paper 31/5/1, section C, question 28, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q28 · 3 marks · Short answerMetals and Non-metals

Name the ore of mercury and state the form in which it is found in nature. Write the chemical equations along with the condition required for the reactions involved in the extraction of mercury from its ore.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Mercury is a metal of low reactivity. Its ore is a compound with sulphur.

Hint 2

For low-reactivity metals, heating the sulphide in air first gives the oxide. Think about what further heating of that oxide gives.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. The ore of mercury is **cinnabar ()**.

    ½ mark
  2. It occurs in nature as a sulphide ore (mercury(II) sulphide).

    ½ mark
  3. Roasting: cinnabar is heated strongly in air, which converts it into mercury oxide:

    1 mark
  4. Mercury is low in the reactivity series, so on further heating the oxide is reduced to the metal:

    1 mark

Answer: Cinnabar (HgS), a sulphide ore; ;

Where the marks are

  • Names cinnabar (½ mark)
  • States that it is a sulphide ore (½ mark)
  • Gives the roasting equation with the heat condition (1 mark)
  • Gives the equation for decomposition of HgO to Hg on heating (1 mark)
