CBSE Class 10 Science 2024: question 27

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2024, paper 31/5/1, section C, question 27, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q27 · 3 marks · Short answerChemical Reactions and Equations

Study the experimental set-up shown in the diagram and write chemical equation for the chemical reaction involved. Name and define the type of reaction. List two other metals which can be used in place of iron to show the same type of reaction with copper sulphate solution.

Figure in the paper: Labelled set-up: a vertical stand on the left clamped to a test tube containing copper sulphate solution. An iron nail, tied with a thread that is held by the clamp, is dipped into the copper sulphate solution in the test tube. Labels: Stand, Test tube, Thread, Copper sulphate solution, Iron nail. See it in the official paper.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

The nail turns brownish and the blue colour fades. Which metal is coming out of the solution?

Hint 2

Iron is more reactive than copper. Any other metal placed above copper in the reactivity series will behave the same way.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Iron displaces copper from copper sulphate solution. The blue solution turns light green and a brown coating of copper forms on the nail:

    1 mark
  2. Type of reaction: displacement reaction.

    ½ mark
  3. Definition: a reaction in which a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from a solution of its salt.

    ½ mark
  4. Two other metals that can replace iron (they are more reactive than copper): zinc

    ½ mark
  5. and aluminium (magnesium also works).

    ½ mark

Answer: ; displacement reaction (a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from its salt solution); zinc and aluminium.

Where the marks are

  • Writes the balanced equation (1 mark)
  • Names the reaction as displacement (½ mark)
  • Defines displacement reaction correctly (½ mark)
  • Lists any two metals more reactive than copper, e.g. Zn, Al, Mg (½ + ½ marks)
