CBSE Class 10 Science 2024: question 28

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2024, paper 31/4/1, section C, question 28, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q28 · 3 marks · Short answerCarbon and its Compounds

Why is the conversion of ethanol to ethanoic acid an oxidation reaction ? Name the oxidising agent used in this conversion. Write chemical equation for this oxidation reaction. How is this reaction different from the reaction in which ethanol burns in the presence of oxygen ?

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Compare the formulae of ethanol and ethanoic acid. What has been added?

Hint 2

Combustion is also oxidation. Think about what its products are.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. It is an oxidation reaction because oxygen is added to ethanol (and hydrogen is removed) to form ethanoic acid.

    ½ mark
  2. Oxidising agent: alkaline potassium permanganate (or acidified potassium dichromate).

    ½ mark
  3. 1 mark
  4. Difference: this is a controlled oxidation in which ethanol changes into another organic compound, ethanoic acid. When ethanol burns in oxygen, it undergoes complete combustion to give carbon dioxide and water with a lot of heat and light: + heat + light.

    1 mark

Answer: Oxygen is added; oxidising agent is alkaline KMnO₄ or acidified K₂Cr₂O₇; ; burning is complete combustion giving CO₂, H₂O, heat and light.

Where the marks are

  • Reason: addition of oxygen (½ mark)
  • Names the oxidising agent (½ mark)
  • Correct equation with the reagent (1 mark)
  • Difference: controlled oxidation vs combustion giving CO₂ + H₂O + heat (1 mark)
