Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Think of what happens to a population when the environment suddenly changes.
Hint 2
Use the NCERT example of bacteria and rising water temperature.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Variations arise during reproduction, so the individuals of a population are not all identical. Some of them may carry a variation that helps them cope with a changed environment.
- 1 mark
Example: in a population of bacteria living in temperate water, suppose a few bacteria have a variation that lets them tolerate heat. If the water temperature rises sharply (for example in a heat wave due to global warming), most bacteria die but the heat-resistant variants survive and reproduce. In this way the species survives, so variation promotes its survival.
Answer: Example: heat-tolerant variant bacteria survive a rise in water temperature while the others die, so the species continues.
Where the marks are
- States that variations help some individuals survive changed conditions (1 mark)
- Gives a suitable example, such as heat-resistant bacteria surviving a heat wave (1 mark)
