Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Compare each free metal with the metal in the salt using the reactivity series.
Hint 2
A displacement happens only when the free metal is above the metal in the salt.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
A metal displaces another metal from its salt solution only if it is more reactive. Use the reactivity series: K > Ca > Na > Mg > Al > Zn > Fe > Pb > H > Cu.
- ½ mark
(a) Al is less reactive than Ca, so there is no reaction. (b) Ca is more reactive than Cu, so a reaction occurs. (c) Cu is less reactive than Fe, so there is no reaction. (d) Mg is more reactive than Zn, so a reaction occurs.
- ½ mark
New products form in (b) and (d). Option (D) is correct.
Answer: (b) and (d): option (D)
Where the marks are
- Chooses option (D), cases (b) and (d) (1 mark)
