Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Think of the opposite of 'biodegradable'.

Hint 2

What happens to plastic or DDT if decomposers cannot act on it, and what happens along a food chain?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Materials that cannot be broken down by biological processes (by decomposers such as bacteria and fungi) are called non-biodegradable substances, for example plastics and DDT.

    1 mark
  2. Harm 1: They are inert, so they stay in the environment for a long time and pollute the soil, water and air.

    ½ mark
  3. Harm 2: Harmful non-biodegradable chemicals enter food chains and build up at each trophic level (biological magnification). Another harm is that they lower soil fertility. Any two of these are enough.

    ½ mark

Answer: Non-biodegradable substances; they persist and pollute the environment, and they cause biological magnification (or reduce soil fertility).

Where the marks are

  • Names non-biodegradable substances (1 mark)
  • Any two correct harms, e.g. persistence and pollution, biomagnification, loss of soil fertility (½ + ½ mark)
