Q29(A) · 3 marks · Short answerLife Processes

Answer the following.

  1. (i)

How does Paramecium obtain its food ?

    1 mark
  2. (ii)

List the role of each of the following in our digestive system : (a) Hydrochloric acid (b) Trypsin (c) Muscular walls of stomach (d) Salivary amylase

    2 marks

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Unlike Amoeba, Paramecium has a fixed shape. Which hair-like structures help it take food in?

Hint 2

Match each item with the nutrient it acts on or its physical action.

Hint 3

Amylase acts on carbohydrates. Pepsin needs an acidic medium to work.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) Paramecium is unicellular with a definite shape. Food is taken in at a specific spot (the oral groove/cytostome), where the beating of cilia moves it in. The food is then digested in a food vacuole.

    1 mark
  2. (ii)(a) Hydrochloric acid: creates an acidic medium that activates pepsin, and kills germs that enter with food.

    ½ mark
  3. (b) Trypsin: digests proteins into smaller peptides in the small intestine.

    ½ mark
  4. (c) Muscular walls of stomach: churn and mix the food thoroughly with the digestive juices.

    ½ mark
  5. (d) Salivary amylase: converts starch into sugar (maltose) in the mouth.

    ½ mark

Answer: (i) Food enters at a specific spot by ciliary movement; (ii) HCl: acidic medium / kills germs; trypsin: digests proteins; stomach muscles: churn food with juices; salivary amylase: starch to sugar

Where the marks are

  • Food taken in at a specific spot by movement of cilia (1 mark)
  • Role of HCl (½ mark)
  • Trypsin digests proteins (½ mark)
  • Muscular walls mix food with juices (½ mark)
  • Salivary amylase converts starch to sugar (½ mark)
