Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
The gas that turns lime water milky is CO₂, so X must be a carbonate.
Hint 2
Which carbonate is used as a building material such as marble?
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- ½ mark
(i) X is calcium carbonate,

formula (e.g. marble or limestone).
- 1 mark
(ii) With dilute HCl:
- 1 mark
The turns lime water milky: . The milkiness is due to insoluble .
Answer: (i) Calcium carbonate, CaCO₃; (ii) CaCO₃ + 2HCl → CaCl₂ + H₂O + CO₂ and Ca(OH)₂ + CO₂ → CaCO₃ + H₂O
Where the marks are
- Chemical name calcium carbonate (½ mark)
- Formula CaCO₃ (½ mark)
- Balanced equation with HCl (1 mark)
- Balanced equation for lime water turning milky (1 mark)
