CBSE Class 10 Science 2023: question 32(a)

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2023, paper 31/5/1, section C, question 32(a), for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q32(a) · 3 marks · Short answerMagnetic Effects of Electric Current

Answer the following.

  1. (i)

A straight cylindrical conductor is suspended with its axis perpendicular to the magnetic field of a horse-shoe magnet. The conductor gets displaced towards left when a current is passed through it. What will happen to the displacement of the conductor if the (1) current through it is increased ? (2) horse-shoe magnet is replaced by another stronger horse-shoe magnet ? (3) direction of current through it is reversed ?

  2. (ii)

Name and state the rule for determining the direction of force on a current carrying conductor in a magnetic field.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

What does the force on a current-carrying conductor depend on?

Hint 2

What happens to the force if only one of field or current is reversed?

Hint 3

The rule uses three mutually perpendicular fingers of one hand.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i)(1) The displacement increases, because the force on the conductor increases with current.

    ½ mark
  2. (2) The displacement increases, because a stronger magnetic field exerts a larger force.

    ½ mark
  3. (3) The direction of displacement is reversed: the conductor now moves towards the right.

    ½ mark
  4. (ii) The rule is Fleming's left-hand rule.

    ½ mark
  5. Statement: stretch the thumb, forefinger and middle finger of the left hand so that they are mutually perpendicular. If the forefinger points in the direction of the magnetic field and the middle finger in the direction of the current, the thumb points in the direction of the force (motion) on the conductor.

    1 mark

Answer: (i)(1) Increases; (2) increases; (3) reverses (moves right); (ii) Fleming's left-hand rule

Where the marks are

  • Increased current gives increased displacement (½ mark)
  • Stronger magnet gives increased displacement (½ mark)
  • Reversed current gives reversed displacement (½ mark)
  • Names Fleming's left-hand rule (½ mark)
  • Correct statement of the rule (1 mark)
