Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Who looks after a kitchen garden, and who looks after a forest?
Hint 2
For a self-sustaining aquarium, think about what the fish need to breathe and to eat.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
(i) A kitchen garden is made and maintained by humans: they choose the plants and supply water, manure and care. It cannot sustain itself, so it is an artificial ecosystem. A forest develops and maintains itself naturally, without human help, so it is a self-sustaining natural ecosystem.
- 1 mark
(ii) Example: an aquarium. Things to keep in mind:
1. Supply oxygen, using an aerator or pump, or ensure enough light for the plants.
2. Add aquatic plants (producers) along with animals (consumers) such as fish, and allow decomposers to be present. - 1 mark
Justification: The oxygen supply is replenished continuously for the organisms to respire. The aquatic plants make food by photosynthesis and serve as food for the animals, while decomposers recycle wastes into nutrients. So all the components needed for energy flow and nutrient cycling are present, and the system becomes self-sustaining.
Answer: (i) A kitchen garden is man-made and maintained by humans (non-sustainable), while a forest is maintained by nature (self-sustaining); (ii) e.g., an aquarium with a continuous oxygen supply and aquatic plants as producers, so oxygen is replenished and the plants provide food.
Where the marks are
- Distinguishes man-made and maintained (kitchen garden) from naturally self-sustaining (forest) (1 mark)
- Two correct requirements, e.g., oxygen supply and aquatic plants with animals (1 mark)
- Valid justification: oxygen replenished and plants serve as food (1 mark)
