- (A)lack of carbon dioxide and formation of pyruvate.
- (B)presence of oxygen and formation of ethanol.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
What happens to respiration in muscles when oxygen runs short?
Hint 2
Which acid forms in muscle cells during anaerobic respiration?
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
During heavy exercise, the oxygen supply to muscles falls short of demand.
- 1 mark
The muscles then respire anaerobically, and pyruvate is changed into lactic acid. Lactic acid builds up and causes cramps. So the answer is option (C).
Answer: Option (C)
Where the marks are
- Links cramps to lack of oxygen and lactic acid formation (1 mark)
