Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Time = distance ÷ speed; write the time taken at x km/h and at (x + 15) km/h.

Hint 2

Convert 30 minutes to hours and set the difference of the two times equal to it.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Let the original speed be km/h. Time at original speed h, at increased speed h. Difference is 30 min h:

    2 marks
  2. 2 marks
  3. or (rejected, speed cannot be negative). Original speed = 45 km/h.

    1 mark

Answer: Original speed = 45 km/h

Where the marks are

  • Forms the time equation (2 marks)
  • Reduces to (2 marks)
  • Solves, rejects −60, speed 45 km/h (1 mark)
