CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Basic 2026: question 33

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2026, paper 430/1/1, section D, question 33, for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q33 · 5 marks · Long answerTriangles

State "Basic Proportionality Theorem" and use it to prove the following : In a quadrilateral ABCD, diagonals AC and BD intersect each other at O such that as shown in the given figure. Prove that ABCD is a trapezium.

Figure in the paper: Quadrilateral ABCD with diagonals AC and BD meeting at O. Vertices in order: A bottom left, B bottom right, C top right, D top left. See it in the official paper.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

A trapezium needs one pair of parallel sides. Try to show .

Hint 2

Draw a line through O parallel to AB, meeting AD at E, and apply BPT in .

Hint 3

Rearrange the given ratio, then use the converse of BPT in .

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Basic Proportionality Theorem: If a line is drawn parallel to one side of a triangle so that it meets the other two sides at distinct points, then it divides those two sides in the same ratio.

  2. Given: ABCD is a quadrilateral whose diagonals AC and BD meet at O, with . To prove: ABCD is a trapezium. Construction: Through O, draw meeting AD at E. (Figure: quadrilateral ABCD with diagonals meeting at O and the line OE drawn parallel to AB.)

    1 mark
  3. In , , so by BPT: …(1)

    1 mark
  4. Given …(2). From (1) and (2): .

    1 mark
  5. In , E and O divide sides AD and AC in the same ratio, so [converse of BPT]. Since and , we get . Hence ABCD has a pair of parallel opposite sides, so ABCD is a trapezium.

    1 mark

Answer: BPT stated. , so ABCD is a trapezium.

Where the marks are

  • Correct statement of BPT (1 mark)
  • Given, to prove, construction , with figure (1 mark)
  • Applies BPT in : (1 mark)
  • Uses the given ratio to get (1 mark)
  • Converse of BPT gives , hence and ABCD is a trapezium (1 mark)
