Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Call the point (x, y). Write 'distance to (6, 4) = distance to (5, 2)' using the distance formula, and square both sides.

Hint 2

After simplifying you get a linear equation. Solve it together with x + y = 5.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Let the required point be . It is equidistant from and , so by the distance formula:

    1 mark
  2. P lies on the line, so , which gives .
    Subtracting (ii) from (i): .
    Then .

    ½ mark
  3. Hence the required point is .
(Check: both squared distances equal .)

    ½ mark

Answer:

Where the marks are

  • Equates the squared distances from (x, y) to (6, 4) and (5, 2) and simplifies to (1 mark)
  • Solves this with to get , (½ mark)
  • States the required point (½ mark)
