Q22(b) · 2 marks · Very short answerTriangles

In the given figure, XY || QR, and PR = 6·3 cm. Find the length of YR.

Figure in the paper: Triangle PQR with apex P at top. X lies on side PQ and Y lies on side PR; segment XY is drawn parallel to base QR (arrows marked on XY and QR to show parallel). See it in the official paper.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

A line parallel to one side of a triangle divides the other two sides in the same ratio.

Hint 2

Whole side to lower part on PQ equals whole side to lower part on PR.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Since , by the Basic Proportionality Theorem . Adding 1 to both sides gives

    1 mark
  2. ½ mark
  3. cm

    ½ mark

Answer: YR = 2.7 cm

Where the marks are

  • Uses BPT to get (1 mark)
  • Substitutes the values (½ mark)
  • Gets YR = 2.7 cm (½ mark)
