CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Standard 2026: question 33

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2026, paper 30/3/1, section D, question 33, for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q33 · 5 marks · Long answerTriangles

In ABC, AD is a median. X is a point on AD such that AX : XD = 2 : 3. BX is extended so that it intersects AC at Y. Prove that BX = 4 XY.

Figure in the paper: Triangle ABC with median AD to side BC (D is midpoint, BD = DC marked). X on AD; line BX extended meets AC at Y. See it in the official paper.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Try drawing a line through D parallel to BY to create similar triangles.

Hint 2

With DZ ∥ BY (Z on AC), D is the midpoint of BC, so the midpoint theorem links DZ and BY.

Hint 3

Use with to link XY and DZ, then compare.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Given: In , AD is a median, so . X lies on AD with . BX produced meets AC at Y.

    To prove: .

  2. Construction: Through D, draw meeting AC at Z.

    ½ mark
  3. In , . By the Basic Proportionality Theorem,

Since D is the midpoint of BC, , so and Z is the midpoint of CY.

    1 mark
  4. In , D and Z are the midpoints of CB and CY. By the midpoint theorem, , that is, ...(i)

    ½ mark
  5. In , (XY is part of BY).

So and [corresponding angles], with common.

    Hence [AA similarity], which gives

    1 mark
  6. Since , we have parts, so .

    Therefore , which gives ...(ii)

    ½ mark
  7. Substituting (ii) in (i):

    1 mark
  8. Now .

    Hence proved.

    ½ mark

Answer: Proved: BX = 4 XY (using DZ ∥ BY, BY = 2DZ and DZ = (5/2)XY).

Where the marks are

  • Construction (½ mark)
  • Uses BPT in to get (1 mark)
  • Gets (½ mark)
  • Shows and writes (1 mark)
  • Gets (½ mark)
  • Combines to get (1 mark)
  • Concludes (½ mark)
