CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Standard 2026: question 30

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2026, paper 30/1/1, section C, question 30, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q30 · 3 marks · Short answerSurface Areas and Volumes

A solid is in the form of a cylinder with hemispherical ends. The total height of the solid is 20 cm and the diameter of the cylinder is 7 cm. Find the total volume of the solid. (Use )

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

The solid is a cylinder plus two hemispheres, all with radius 7/2 cm.

Hint 2

The total height includes the two hemispherical ends, so subtract 2r to get the cylinder's height.

Hint 3

Add πr²h and 2 × (2/3)πr³, taking πr² common to simplify.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Radius of cylinder = radius of each hemisphere cm.

    ½ mark
  2. Total height = 20 cm. Each hemispherical end adds height .

    Height of cylinder cm.

    ½ mark
  3. Volume of solid = volume of cylinder + volume of 2 hemispheres:

    1 mark
  4. Take common:

    1 mark

Answer: Volume = cm³ ≈ 680.17 cm³

Where the marks are

  • Takes radius = 7/2 cm (½ mark)
  • Finds height of cylinder = 13 cm (½ mark)
  • Writes volume = cylinder + two hemispheres with correct substitution (1 mark)
  • Simplifies to cm³ (1 mark)
