Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2024, paper 430/4/1, section D, question 32(b), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q32(b) · 5 marks · Long answerSurface Areas and Volumes
A solid is in the shape of a cone surmounted on a hemisphere with both their diameters being equal to 7 cm and the height of the cone is equal to its radius. Find the volume of the solid.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
The solid is a hemisphere plus a cone with the same radius, half of 7 cm.
Hint 2
Add (2/3)πr³ and (1/3)πr²h with h = r = 3.5 cm.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Radius of hemisphere = radius of cone cm.
- ½ mark
Height of cone cm.
- 1½ marks
Volume of solid = volume of hemisphere + volume of cone
- 1½ marks
- ½ mark
Answer: Volume = 539/4 cm³ = 134.75 cm³
Where the marks are
- Radius = 7/2 cm (1 mark)
- Height of cone = 7/2 cm (½ mark)
- Volume = hemisphere + cone, with correct formulas and substitution (3 marks)
- Final volume 134.75 cm³ (½ mark)
